Expert interpretation along the East Coast Trail while watching and learning about whales, seabirds, and other local flora and fauna of Newfoundland
There is potential to see a variety of animal species including humpback, minke, and fin whales; white-sided and common dolphins; Atlantic puffins, common murres, and northern gannets; ocean sunfish (Mola mola); river otter, mink, red fox, snowshoe hare, and moose; songbirds, eagles, and woodpeckers (feel free to ask for a more comprehensive species list, if birding is your thing!); and a number of others. However, please note that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. The probability of seeing the aforementioned species varies with time of year, time of day, weather and wave conditions. Even if we see no wildlife, we will learn and talk about plants, geology, and local culture and history as we walk the beautiful trail.
Hiking tours depart from one of two locations in Bay Bulls, Newfoundland. Depending on logistical constraints, we may take an out-and-back route which visits the Bay Bulls lighthouse, or a one-way route which ends in Witless Bay; both tours are approximately 7-7.5 km long / 4 hours to hike and are of easy to moderate difficulty, with similar odds of spotting wildlife. Guided hikes are offered on weekends only, in-season (May to September), when booked in advance. Transportation to and from the trailhead is not included but could potentially be provided upon request and for an extra fee, if scheduling allows. Please inquire for further details!
